Senate approves Sen. Hertel resolution declaring neo-Nazi groups as terrorists

Proposal denounces radical hate groups, declares them domestic terrorist organizations
LANSING, Mich. — Today the Michigan Senate passed a resolution, introduced by Sen. Curtis Hertel Jr. (D-East Lansing), that denounces radical hate groups, including white nationalist and neo-Nazi groups, and declares them domestic terrorist organizations.
Senate Resolution 82 was introduced in response to the violent, white nationalist rally that took place on August 12, in Charlottesville, Virginia, during which a woman was killed and nearly 20 people were injured.
“Nazism, racism and fascism are all evil, period,” Sen. Hertel said. “We fought two of the deadliest wars in the history of this country against these ideologies, and we cannot allow homegrown extremists to revive such evil. The right to spew hatred is not protected when the goal is to limit the rights of others by ending their lives.”
According to the Southern Poverty Law Center’s list of such hate groups in Michigan, the following would be considered domestic terrorist organizations as prescribed by Senator Hertel’s resolution:

Since 9/11, there have been 85 attacks in the me U.S. by violent extremists — with 62 by far-right hate groups — that have killed 225 people.
“The march towards progress and equality is the story of America. That is our history, and I will fight every day to make sure we never go backwards,” Sen. Hertel said.
Since Charlottesville, three other state legislatures — in Illinois, Massachusetts and Ohio — have also passed similar resolutions denouncing radical hate groups and classifying them as domestic terrorist organizations.
Copies of Senate Resolution 82 will now be sent to President Donald Trump, Gov. Rick Snyder and members of the Michigan congressional delegation.
