Bill to name a section of M-52 after fallen deputy sheriff signed into law
LANSING, Mich. — Late yesterday afternoon, Sen. Curtis Hertel Jr. (D-East Lansing) was honored to host the family of Ingham County Deputy Sheriff Grant William Whitaker for a bill signing. Gov. Snyder signed Senate Bill 509 to rename a portion of State Highway M-52 as the “Deputy Grant Whitaker Memorial Highway” in his honor.
A portion of Highway M-52 in Stockbridge Township in Ingham County — where Grant grew up and lived — from the intersection of Highways M-52 and M-106 to the intersection of Highways M-52 and M-36, will be renamed after Deputy Whitaker, who died in the line of duty on Dec. 7, 2014.
“It was such a special, meaningful day,” Sen. Hertel said. “It was a privilege to have Deputy Whitaker’s family here to watch the bill be signed, and it’s particularly fitting not just as a remembrance of the ultimate sacrifice he paid, but also because this Thursday will mark the third anniversary of his passing.”
Deputy Whitaker was killed in the line of duty in a vehicle crash during pursuit of a fleeing driver who attempted to elude a traffic stop. His patrol car left the roadway and struck a tree during the chase, causing him to suffer fatal injuries. The driver of the fleeing vehicle was arrested several days later, convicted of eluding police and driving on a suspended license, and sentenced to prison.
“This memorial sign will be a visual reminder of Deputy Whitaker’s impact on the community that he so proudly served, and I hope it brings his family and friends some comfort to know that he will never be forgotten,” Sen. Hertel said.
