Senator Hertel, Jr. to Host Survivor & Ally Empowerment Day at the Capitol

LANSING, Mich., April 25, 2018 — Sen. Curtis Hertel, Jr. (D–East Lansing) will host a Survivor & Ally Empowerment Day with Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker (R–Lawton) on Thursday, April 26, 2018, in recognition of National Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
The day of advocacy and empowerment for survivors of sexual assault will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Michigan State Capitol Building in Lansing. Survivors and allies are encouraged to attend, embrace their voice and recognize their power to call for cultural and systemic change to end sexual violence.

9 a.m., Rally — Gather at the Capitol steps for the Empowerment Rally! Find out who your legislators are and learn how to share your story and information on sexual violence with them. Speakers will begin at 9:30 a.m. and include:

10 a.m., Senate Session Presentation — Join us for session in the Senate chamber gallery as Sen. Hertel recognizes the Sister Survivors and presents a resolution to declare April 26th Survivor Empowerment Day, honoring survivors of sexual assault.
1 p.m., Consent Forum — Survivors, allies and advocates will be able to share their story and support for sexual assault legislation with a panel of legislators in Rooms 402/403 of the Capitol Building.
An affirmative consent bill, also known as “Yes Means Yes” or Senate Bill 620, was introduced by Sen. Hertel and co-sponsored by Sen. Schuitmaker on Oct. 10, 2017. It has not yet received a committee hearing.
