LANSING,\u00a0Mich. (Jan. 30, 2026) \u2014\u00a0As Michiganders begin to receive their W2s in preparation for tax season, Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Kevin Hertel<\/b>\u00a0(D-St. Clair Shores) is reflecting on the passage of the most significant increase to the credit in state history. To help alleviate financial hardship for families, Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Hertel\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and his colleagues created\u00a0the Working Families Tax Credit \u2014 quintupling Michigan\u2019s match of the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) from 6% to 30%.\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n

The Working Families Tax Credit was part of the\u00a0<\/span>Lowering MI Costs Plan<\/a><\/u><\/span> \u2014 the biggest tax relief initiative Michigan has seen in decades that cut taxes by $1 billion for the Michiganders who need it most. The plan also overhauled the unfair and unpopular retirement tax. The proposal was designed to combat rising costs and help more Michigan families and seniors save money.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe issue of affordability is one Michigan\u00a0families\u00a0know\u00a0all\u00a0too well.\u00a0Between groceries and gas,\u00a0child care\u00a0and doctors\u2019\u00a0visits, the cost of living\u00a0adds up\u00a0too quick nowadays,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Hertel<\/b>. \u201cAs parents struggle to balance budgets while trying to find a few dollars to set aside for rainy days or their children\u2019s college fund, it\u2019s vital that lawmakers take steps to alleviate some of that pressure. With Michigan\u2019s historic 30% match of the EITC, families can keep more of their hard-earned money and build a more secure future for their kids without having to choose between basic necessities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year, the expanded credit helped approximately 665,000 Michiganders who have the hardest time affording the basics save an average of $890 more per year, resulting in $3,856 in total savings with the federal and state EITCs combined. The benefits of the EITC extend beyond household budgets, helping contribute over $550 million to local economies and small businesses, as families use the additional breathing room to afford necessities like child care, car repairs, new appliances, groceries, and more.<\/p>\n
