LANSING, Mich.\u00a0(March\u00a024, 2026) \u2014\u00a0Today,\u00a0the Senate Finance, Insurance, and Consumer Protection Committee\u00a0passed\u00a0Senate Bills\u00a0(SBs)\u00a0<\/span>757<\/u><\/a><\/span>–760<\/u><\/a><\/span>,\u00a0Senate\u00a0Democrats\u2019\u00a0<\/span>Kids Over Clicks package<\/u><\/a><\/span>\u00a0that aims to\u00a0improve internet safety and safeguard Michigan children\u00a0from rampant digital dangers,\u00a0from\u00a0addiction\u00a0to\u00a0exploitation.\u00a0Crafted in tandem with\u00a0industry\u00a0experts\u00a0and advocates,\u00a0<\/span>this legislation<\/u><\/a><\/span>\u00a0would\u00a0help\u00a0combat\u00a0emerging risks associated with\u00a0unfettered\u00a0social media\u00a0and Artificial Intelligence (AI)\u00a0usage\u00a0among Michigan kids.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we see an alarming rising rate of teen suicide, depression, anxiety, and more, we cannot sit back and do nothing. We must step up and address the root cause of Big Tech\u2019s exploitative and addictive algorithms that trap kids in an endless cycle of harmful content,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Darrin Camilleri\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(D-Trenton). \u201cOur Kids Over Clicks package will do just that by requiring these tech companies to design a better feed experience for its youngest, most vulnerable users.\u201d<\/p>\n

Championed by Sens.\u00a0<\/span>Camilleri<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Kevin Hertel<\/b>\u00a0(D-St. Clair Shores),\u00a0Stephanie Chang\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(D-Detroit),\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Dayna\u00a0Polehanki<\/b>\u00a0(D-Livonia), Kids Over Clicks\u00a0would hold Big Tech companies accountable for unethical practices that prey on vulnerable users in the name of profit. More specifically:<\/div>\n

    SB\u00a0757<\/b>\u00a0(Camilleri),\u00a0the Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (SAFE) For Kids Act, would prohibit social media platforms from providing addictive, personal data-driven feeds to minors unless parental consent is given;<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    SBs\u00a0758<\/b>\u00a0(Hertel) and\u00a0<\/span>759<\/b>\u00a0(Chang),\u00a0the Kids Code Act, would mandate stricter data privacy and safety settings for minors on digital platforms while also giving parents more control over their children\u2019s online accounts; and<\/div>\n<\/li>\n

    SB 760<\/b>\u00a0(Polehanki), the Leading Ethical AI Development (LEAD) for Kids Act,\u00a0would ensure that dangerous AI companion chatbots are inaccessible to children, including those that have the capability to encourage self-harming behaviors, illegal activities, sexually explicit interactions, etc.<\/div>\n
    <\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \u201cAs a parent, I\u2019m focused on giving my kids a childhood where they can play outside, run around with friends, and enjoy just being a kid,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Hertel<\/b>. \u201cBut as social media becomes\u00a0more and more\u00a0present in our lives, and as Big Tech chooses to push unethical, predatory practices \u2014 that goal is becoming difficult to achieve.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0why our Kids Over Clicks package is so important. This legislation will equip parents with the power and tools they need to keep their kids safe online and protect their childhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cParents\u00a0and advocates from all over\u00a0the state\u00a0have\u00a0banded\u00a0together and used\u00a0their voices\u00a0to demand better\u00a0protections\u00a0for\u00a0our\u00a0kids\u00a0online\u00a0\u2014 and Senate Democrats have heeded the call,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0Polehanki<\/b>, a former educator.\u00a0\u201cToday\u2019s committee passage of our Kids Over Clicks\u00a0legislation\u00a0illustrates\u00a0our continued commitment to\u00a0a better Michigan\u00a0for everyone\u00a0\u2014 because when we invest in the\u00a0safety and\u00a0well-being of our kids, we\u2019re investing in the very future of our state.\u201d<\/p>\n
