(April\u00a021,\u00a02026) \u2014\u00a0During\u00a0Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Michigan Senate\u00a0came together in bipartisan\u00a0fashion to pass<span>\u00a0<\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0626\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" id=\"OWAfb757167-5875-06d4-5a24-8fe3aa2addc7\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW255393922 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" data-linkindex=\"1\" title=\"https:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0626\"><u>Senate Bill 626,<\/u><\/a><\/span>\u00a0Sen.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Kevin Hertel<\/b>\u2019s (D-St. Clair Shores) legislation that would strengthen\u00a0Wyatt\u2019s Law\u00a0and help parents protect their kids from\u00a0individuals\u00a0with a known record of abuse\u00a0or neglect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor six years, I worked alongside\u00a0Wyatt\u2019s mom to turn unimaginable tragedy into meaningful change and empower parents\u00a0across our state\u00a0with the information they need to better protect their kids,\u201d said Sen.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Hertel<\/b>. \u201cBut\u00a0we\u00a0knew our work\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0stop\u00a0there.\u00a0We\u2019ve\u00a0continued\u00a0working\u00a0with parents, advocates, and stakeholders\u00a0to\u00a0evaluate the effectiveness of this legislation and find ways to further improve it.\u00a0By strengthening Wyatt\u2019s Law\u00a0with this more\u00a0comprehensive\u00a0definition of abuse,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0closing critical gaps and ensuring\u00a0all violators\u00a0are included\u00a0on\u00a0the registry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/housedems.com\/hertel-celebrates-wyatts-law-taking-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" id=\"OWAa493f2a6-cbf1-2db6-9874-23df9571f7e9\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW255393922 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" data-linkindex=\"2\" title=\"https:\/\/housedems.com\/hertel-celebrates-wyatts-law-taking-effect\/\"><u>Originally championed by Sen.\u00a0<\/u><b><u>Hertel\u00a0<\/u><\/b><u>in 2022<\/u><\/a><\/span>, Wyatt\u2019s Law\u00a0helps keep serial abusers away from children by making information about convicted child abusers available to parents whose children are in the care of another adult.\u00a0The bill is named after Wyatt Rewoldt, a child abused by his father\u2019s girlfriend who had\u00a0a previous\u00a0history of child abuse. Wyatt\u2019s mother, Erica Hammel,\u00a0worked\u00a0hand-in-hand\u00a0with Sen.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Hertel<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>to get this law passed.<\/p>\n<p>Senate\u00a0Bill\u00a0626\u00a0would\u00a0strengthen Wyatt\u2019s Law by expanding the definition of \u201cconfirmed serious abuse or neglect\u201d\u00a0to include manslaughter, the death of a child, and sexual abuse. This comes at the request of the Michigan Dept. of Health and Human Services,\u00a0who\u00a0has\u00a0found that the current\u00a0definition\u00a0does not encompass the\u00a0full\u00a0range of cases they\u00a0encounter.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation now heads to the Michigan House for their consideration.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" style=\"text-align: center;\">###<\/div>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly four\u00a0years after\u00a0creating\u00a0Wyatt\u2019s Law while in the Michigan House, Sen.
