ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich.\u00a0(June 4, 2026) \u2014\u00a0With the help and advocacy of Sen. <\/span>Kevin Hertel<\/b>\u00a0(D-St. Clair Shores), the <\/span>Walter F. Bruce VFW Post<\/u><\/a><\/span>\u00a0was\u00a0recently\u00a0awarded\u00a0a $252,000 grant from the Michigan Dept. of Military and Veterans Affairs\u00a0(DMVA).\u00a0As the largest VFW\u00a0Post in the state, the organization will use the funding to complete long-needed infrastructure improvements, strengthening its ability to serve\u00a0its\u00a0members and continue supporting the broader St. Clair Shores community for years to come.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe VFW Bruce Post has been a cornerstone of St. Clair Shores for decades\u00a0\u2014 serving as an\u00a0integral\u00a0place in our community where veterans can connect with one another and receive support and resources,\u201d said Sen. Hertel<\/b>. \u201cThe\u00a0veterans who rely on the\u00a0space\u00a0for a sense of belonging after returning home from service\u00a0deserve\u00a0for\u00a0it to be safe, accessible, and equipped to meet their needs.\u00a0This funding will help ensure the Post can continue\u00a0to be\u00a0a second home for veterans and a valued community gathering place for\u00a0many years into the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Originally founded in 1932, the Bruce Post has grown to be the largest Post in Michigan with over 1,500 members. For the past six decades, the Post has operated from its home on Jefferson Avenue, just north of 11 Mile Road, serving as a hub for veterans and community members alike. Each week, hundreds of veterans and their family members visit the Post to share meals, connect with fellow service members, and build community. The facility also hosts community events and supports charitable causes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the years, Post members and volunteers have dedicated\u00a0many\u00a0hours to\u00a0maintaining\u00a0and improving the facility \u2014 helping with everything from carpentry and masonry to plumbing and electrical work.\u00a0However, one critical\u00a0project\u00a0has been\u00a0beyond\u00a0their\u00a0capacity. This grant funding will\u00a0help\u00a0the Post\u00a0repave\u00a0their parking lot,\u00a0which has not been resurfaced in over 40 years and currently\u00a0poses\u00a0a\u00a0safety hazard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSince the Bruce Post\u2019s founding\u00a0over 90 years ago, our members have always taken pride in our facility and\u00a0worked continuously to maintain and improve it, donating countless hours of labor to keep it running,\u201d said\u00a0VFW Bruce Post\u00a0Commander David Ellis<\/b>.\u00a0\u201cHowever, repaving our parking lot\u00a0has been a\u00a0project that\u00a0is far beyond our ability to fix on our own. Thanks to this grant\u00a0Senator\u00a0Hertel helped us secure,\u00a0we\u2019ll\u00a0be able to finally address\u00a0this\u00a0long-standing concern and ensure our Post\u00a0remains\u00a0accessible and welcoming for the thousands of veterans, families, and community members who\u00a0visit\u00a0us each year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The funding comes from the DMVA\u2019s Veterans Nonprofit Improvement Grant program<\/u><\/a>, which provides critical support\u00a0for\u00a0capital improvement projects that enhance service delivery, improve safety, and extend the useful life of facilities dedicated to those who have served. As Chair of the committee responsible for the DMVA budget, Sen. Hertel <\/b>has been a consistent champion for Michigan veterans \u2014 helping secure funding not only for this program but also to help veterans access their full slate of benefits<\/u><\/a>, support the state\u2019s veteran homes<\/u><\/a>, expand veteran suicide prevention programs<\/u><\/a>, and bolster\u00a0benefits for\u00a0servicemembers<\/u><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
