GROSSE POINTE WOODS, Mich. (June\u00a022,\u00a02026) \u2014\u00a0Last\u00a0week, Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Kevin Hertel<\/b>\u00a0(D-St. Clair Shores)\u00a0hosted a roundtable\u00a0with\u00a0local leaders and public safety officers from\u00a0the\u00a0Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods to discuss\u00a0growing concerns over the reckless use of motorized bikes and scooters in the community\u00a0and explore\u00a0potential\u00a0solutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe number of young people riding\u00a0faster and more dangerous\u00a0e-bikes across our lakeshore community without a clear understanding of the rules of the road is a disaster waiting to happen,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Hertel<\/b>. \u201cWe cannot wait for\u00a0more kids to be hurt before we take a serious look at current\u00a0laws and ordinances and find a solution that keeps both our drivers and riders safe.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0why this discussion is so important \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0about getting ahead of a growing problem\u00a0before\u00a0more\u00a0preventable tragedies\u00a0occur.\u201d<\/p>\n

From\u00a0<\/span>Commerce Township<\/u><\/a><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Dearborn\u00a0Heights<\/u><\/a><\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>Port Huron<\/u><\/a> <\/span>and Marquette<\/u><\/a><\/span>, accidents involving e-Bikes are on the rise across Michigan as the products have become incredibly popular, especially among teenagers and young adults. While many e-bikes travel at speeds between 20 and 30 mph, some can reach 50 mph \u2014 speeds that can result in a serious or even fatal crash, especially for young people who oftentimes ride without helmets and don\u2019t obey road rules.<\/p>\n

The urgency of the issue was underscored just hours after Monday\u2019s discussion, when\u00a0<\/span>a driver hit two kids on e-bikes in St. Clair Shores<\/u><\/a><\/span>. While the circumstances of that incident remain under investigation, it serves as another reminder of the need for public education and a thoughtful review of Michigan\u2019s current laws.<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u201cWe\u2019ve been very fortunate here in Grosse Pointe Woods to not have had any fatal accidents involving e-Bikes\u00a0yet,\u00a0but we can\u2019t afford to wait until\u00a0that changes,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>John Kosnake<\/b>,\u00a0Grosse Pointe Woods Public Safety Director. \u201cWe should be taking a proactive approach to ensure\u00a0no family in our community has to suffer such a tragedy. And thanks to\u00a0Senator Hertel\u2019s leadership and forward-thinking approach,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0able to\u00a0begin\u00a0that work now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michigan legalized the use of e-bikes statewide in 2017, creating a\u00a0<\/span>three-class system to define how they are regulated<\/u><\/a><\/span>. However, during the roundtable discussion, many participants agreed that the\u00a0original\u00a0classifications\u00a0are not keeping up with product advancements as newer, faster, and more powerful models are blurring the lines between traditional e-bikes, electric motorcycles, and other motorized vehicles.\u00a0Public safety officials also expressed concern that children as young as 10 years old are\u00a0operating\u00a0high-speed e-bikes, often without helmets, formal safety training, or adult supervision.<\/p>\n

Following the discussion, local officials expressed a commitment to continued collaboration on a coordinated regional approach to e-bike regulation, with Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Hertel\u00a0<\/span><\/b>planning to engage\u00a0additional\u00a0stakeholders and begin working on potential state-level legislative solutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the past several weeks, it has become increasingly clear \u2014 both as a parent and as a local elected official \u2014 that residents across our community are deeply concerned about the growing safety challenges posed by e-bikes and other micromobility devices,\u201d said Grosse Pointe Farms City Councilmember\u00a0<\/span>Neil Sroka<\/b>. \u201cI share those concerns, which is why I\u2019m grateful to Senator Hertel for bringing together public safety leaders and local officials from across our communities to begin identifying practical solutions. The discussion we had was an important opportunity to explore what steps local communities can take now, while also identifying ways the state can support those efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n
