Senate Bills 966-968 would help every hardworking family find a place to call home through the Michigan Housing Opportunity Credit
LANSING, Mich. (June 2, 2026) — Today, the Senate Committee on Housing and Human Services advanced a vital bill package within Michigan Senate Democrats’ A Michigan You Can Afford agenda. Senate Bills 966–968, introduced by Sen. Jeff Irwin (D-Ann Arbor), would create a Michigan Housing Opportunity Credit that would pair with the federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) to increase the supply of guaranteed affordable housing in our state.
By enacting the Michigan Housing Opportunity Credit, Michigan would join the majority of states that offer a state-level supplement to the federal LIHTC, the main financing tool for developing affordable housing projects. The additional financing will cover funding gaps, enabling developers to make use of federal LIHTC dollars to invest in the building of over 2,500 new homes every year. Michigan currently has 200,000 low-income households unable to find affordable housing.
“Housing costs are crippling family budgets and making it harder for young people to find a future in our state,” said Sen. Irwin, Chair of the Senate Housing and Human Services Committee. “This legislation will mean more housing, leading to more options and affordability.”
This legislation is part of Michigan Senate Democrats’ broader A Michigan You Can Afford agenda — which includes plans to make groceries, gas, and other household needs more affordable, cut utility bills, lower healthcare costs, and more.
Senate Bills 966-968 now head to the full Senate floor for further consideration.
