The group was originally founded in Michigan in 1942, provides support  and advocacy for veterans and their families in Michigan and across U.S.

LANSING, Mich. (June 7, 2023) – Today, Sen. Veronica Klinefelt (D-Eastpointe) and the Michigan Senate passed Senate Bill 235, a bipartisan bill to establish February 1 as Blue Star Mothers Day in Michigan. It would permanently designate a day each year to honor mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers and female legal guardians who have children serving in the U.S. military (guard and reserves) or children who are veterans.

The bill is cosponsored by Sen. Klinefelt, who is the Chair of the Michigan Senate Veterans and Emergency Services Committee. The bill will now move to the Michigan House of Representatives for consideration.

“It is a privilege to be part of honoring these women in such a meaningful way,” said Sen. Klinefelt. “Their continuous support of those fighting to preserve our freedom and liberty is worthy of recognition and applause. I am grateful for the Blue Star Mothers in my family, and all the Blue Star moms around the state who do so much for our servicemembers and our communities.

The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. was originally founded in Michigan in 1942, following the attack on Pearl Harbor in which Flint-native Jack Pitcher died aboard the USS West Virginia. The organization was formally chartered by Congress in 1960 during the Vietnam War.

Since the early days, members have assembled care packages to ship overseas, hosted events or fundraisers at home, participated in funeral or memorial ceremonies when called upon and volunteer for myriad veterans’ programs to offer support and advocacy wherever possible.

Additionally, the Michigan Senate Veterans and Emergency Services Committee, chaired by Sen. Klinefelt, passed House Bill 4555 today, with a full Senate vote expected tomorrow. This bill, sponsored by Rep. Julie Rogers (D-Kalamazoo), would establish June 12 as Women Veteran’s Day in Michigan.
