LANSING — Sen. Sean McCann issued the following statement today on the heels of the announcement by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel to sue manufacturers of PFAS, the toxic ‘forever chemicals’ that have contaminated the drinking water for nearly 2 million Michigan residents:
“Corporations manufacturing PFAS that have contaminated waterways across Michigan and harmed our environment, putting the public’s health at risk, should be held responsible for their damaging actions. Michigan families deserve answers and need strong, decisive leadership now more than ever.
“I am grateful to Gov. Whitmer and Attorney General Nessel for being proactive on this widespread issue and for their commitment to clean water, and I will continue working with them to help usher in a new era of environmental justice in Michigan.”
Sen. McCann (D-Kalamazoo) represents the 20th Senate District that includes all of Kalamazoo County. His first bill of the 100th Legislature was Senate Bill 103, introduced on Feb. 7, 2019, to set the highest and best standards for Michigan’s drinking water. The legislation would repeal Public Act 602 of 2018, which prohibits the state from setting standards that implement the best science and practices to safeguard its water resources, but it has sat awaiting action by the Republican-controlled Michigan Legislature in the Senate Oversight Committee since the day it was introduced.
