SERGEANT PROXMIRE MEMORIAL HIGHWAY DEDICATION

It has been just over one year since Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Ryan J. Proxmire gave his life in the line of duty. Recently, community leaders gathered for a dedication ceremony for a stretch of U.S. 131 that is now named the Sergeant Ryan J. Proxmire Memorial Highway, thanks to legislation sponsored by my colleague, Representative Julie M. Rogers.

PARKWYN VILLAGE 75th ANNIVERSARY

I recently joined Parkwyn Village residents to celebrate the neighborhood’s 75th Anniversary and present a formal state tribute honoring the occasion.

The Parkwyn Village Association was incorporated in August 1946 and purchased 47 acres of Michigan farmland just outside of the Kalamazoo city limits that existed at that time. The association’s founders retained internationally famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright to design the site plan for Parkwyn Village in early 1947. Many of the design elements of these early Parkwyn Village houses were unusual and innovative when they were built. Today, those same groundbreaking design elements are standard features of many American homes.

This year, the neighborhood’s historical, cultural, and architectural assets have been recognized with a listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
