RESOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE DISABILITY AWARENESS & EDUCATION DAY

This summer, I was pleased to meet with Disability Network Southwest Michigan’s Disability Advocacy Academy students. These passionate students dedicated themselves to a collective project and have proposed that Disability Awareness & Education (DA&E) Day be a state holiday celebrated annually on the third Friday in October. Group members created flyers, brochures, Facebook, and Instagram accounts, and a Change.org petition to promote their idea. They sent letters to other disability organizations and contacted their state legislators.

I was impressed with their hard work and preparation, and I was proud to work with them to author and sponsor Senate Resolution 167. The Michigan Senate unanimously adopted this resolution to recognize Disability Awareness & Education Day this Oct. 21, 2022. As I said in remarks to my colleagues on the Senate floor, I hope this resolution will help serve as a reminder that the huge community of people with disabilities in Michigan is recognized in our state and in the Senate, and that good people advocating for themselves can make their voices heard by their elected representatives.

I thank the Disability Advocacy Academy students for their hard work and look forward to working together with my legislative colleagues to support and improve Michigan’s programs serving our residents with disabilities.

A GUIDE ON MICHIGAN ELECTIONS

As the November 8th elections approach, I wanted to share, one more time, my resource guide on how to:

📪 Request an absentee ballot

🗳 Look up your clerk’s office to vote early

📮 Find your clerk’s ballot drop box

✅ Track your ballot

Many constituents have asked me for this information, so I wanted to make sure it was available to everyone, because everyone should have the freedom to vote and have a say in the decisions that impact our lives. Click here to read on!
