SWEARING-IN CEREMONY

On Wednesday, January 11, I was proud to be sworn in to a second term in the Michigan Senate – this time serving the new Senate District 19, encompassing most of Kalamazoo County and Antwerp Township. I was proud to take my Oath of Office and begin my work to serve our community in the 102nd Michigan Legislature. My colleagues and I are ready to tackle the biggest issues facing our state and deliver real results for our communities.

COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS

One of the privileges of serving in the Michigan Legislature is getting to lead and serve on various committees that consider proposed legislation. I was honored to be recently appointed to the following committees:

LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES

I was proud to join my colleagues in the Michigan Legislature to introduce our six top priorities, including:

I have co-sponsored each of these bills and look forward to working with my partners to deliver on these promises for our communities to make Michigan an even better place to call home.

“NO STRICTER THAN FEDERAL” LEGISLATION

As my first bill for the 102nd Michigan Legislature, I re-introduced my “No Stricter than Federal” legislation. My bill would repeal Public Act 602 of 2018, which prohibits the state from setting environmental standards that exceed federal rules. Doing so would allow Michigan to implement the best science and practices to safeguard our water resources, especially because federal regulations often exclude stronger, well-established data that is unique to a given state.

The existing law currently requires state officials to spend time and taxpayer dollars building a case for better protections any time they exceed the national standard, which delays the adoption of best practices and leaves residents vulnerable. My legislation would ensure Michigan can adopt safer standards to protect Michigan’s drinking water more quickly.
