Passed by the Senate in July 2025, SB 274 would rename a portion of US-131 in honor of Kalamazoo area veteran

LANSING, Mich. (April 14, 2026) — Today, the Michigan House of Representatives voted unanimously to pass Senate Bill 274, legislation sponsored by Sen. Sean McCann (D-Kalamazoo) to rename a portion of US-131 as the “Master Sergeant Gregory T. Kuhse Memorial Highway.” The bill, which passed the Michigan Senate with unanimous bipartisan support on July 1, 2025, honors a former constituent of Sen. McCann’s who lost his life during his service in Afghanistan. Sen. McCann was joined at today’s Senate session by Master Sergeant Kuhse’s widow to commemorate this effort getting one step closer to becoming law.

“Some things should transcend partisanship, and I am proud to have the House act today on my bill to remember one of my constituents and a veteran, husband, and father who gave his life in service to our country,” said Sen. McCann. “This legislation will not just help keep the name and memory of Master Sergeant Gregory T. Kuhse alive for his family, friends, and neighbors, but for all who pass and can join in recognizing the sacrifice that he made.”
