LANSING, Mich. (May 4, 2026) — Today, Sen. Sean McCann (D-Kalamazoo) has issued the following statement in response to a recent settlement between Eagle Creek Renewable Energy and the state of Michigan:
“The Kalamazoo River is a vital resource to Michigan and our community. The disastrous sediment released at Morrow Dam set back our progress to restore this waterway. It choked the growth of fish and wildlife for many seasons.
“I appreciate Attorney General Dana Nessel’s work to arrive at this settlement as the likely best outcome given the circumstances and to achieve some accountability for the responsible parties. I was proud to pass a law in the wake of this disaster that gives our environmental protectors a way to better and more quickly respond to something like this in the future instead of waiting around for years of litigation to bring solutions that were needed immediately.”
