LANSING, Mich. (Sept. 21, 2021) — Today, Sen. Sean McCann (D-Kalamazoo) issued the following statement after the Michigan Senate passed the Fiscal Year 2022 budget, set to begin on Oct. 1:
“I am excited that my Senate colleagues and I have agreed on a bipartisan budget framework today that provides for substantial investments in critical priorities and projects in Michigan and Kalamazoo County.”
Among the included budget items specific to the 20th Senate District that Sen. McCann fought for are:
- $3 million toward construction of a U.S. 131 interchange on the north side of Kalamazoo County, allowing critical two-way transportation routes for local businesses and relieving wear and tear on nearby local roads.
- $1.5 million to support the City of Portage in construction of a new Portage Senior Center, serving seniors throughout Kalamazoo County.
- $1 million to support expansion of additional treatment capacity at the Great Lakes Center for Autism Treatment and Research, serving a great need for children primarily diagnosed with autism who engage in behaviors so disruptive and dangerous as to require they no longer live at home.
“With significant federal relief money still unspent even after the passage of this annual budget, I will continue to advocate to my colleagues in the legislative majority to put those funds to use on the many great needs facing our communities,” Sen. McCann added.
