STATE BUDGET BIPARTISAN AGREEMENT

Last week, my colleagues and I in the Michigan Senate came together in bipartisan fashion to pass bills enacting a state budget for Fiscal Year 2022-23 — set to begin on Oct. 1.

Totaling a historic $76 billion, our bipartisan and balanced budget invests in critical priorities like education, public health, and infrastructure, without raising taxes.

I’m also proud to highlight some Kalamazoo County-specific priorities I was able to help secure funding for in this budget, including:

I am thankful to have heard important input from many of you throughout this year’s budget process, please continue to stay in touch with me with your priorities for the great state of Michigan going forward.

I voted yes to invest in our communities

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: ABORTION CURRENTLY REMAINS LEGAL IN MICHIGAN

On June 24, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling overturning Roe v. Wade and removing the rights of women in making choices about their own bodies and families from making deeply personal decisions. Without Roe, each state now determines abortion access for its residents.

The current version of Michigan’s law criminalizing women who seek an abortion, without exceptions for rape or incest, was enacted in 1931. It was not until 1973, with the ruling of Roe v. Wade, that Michigan’s 1931 ban was rendered unconstitutional, and abortion became legal in the state of Michigan.

This new ruling’s consequences may extend even further than the devastating loss of reproductive freedom — many guaranteed rights are now uncertain. Overturning this decision puts the rights to contraceptives (Griswold), the rights to interracial marriage (Loving), the right to same-sex marriage (Obergefell), and countless others in jeopardy. Make no mistake: This is not over.

Our duly elected leaders here in Michigan, Governor Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel, have taken steps to minimize the immediate impact of this ruling as much as legally possible. Governor Whitmer has filed a lawsuit asking the Michigan Supreme Court to recognize a constitutional right to an abortion under the Due Proc ess Clause of the Michigan Constitution. It also requests that the court stop enforcement of the 1931 Michigan abortion ban. For the time being, a court order is temporarily blocking the enforcement of Michigan’s abortion ban and abortion remains legal in the State of Michigan.

As your state senator, I will continue to fight to protect reproductive freedom in Michigan. In the meantime, if you need medical care or have further questions, please contact your doctor as soon as possible.

CONSTITUENT INPUT SURVEY

My team and I are knocking on doors around Kalamazoo County to seek input from constituents on what issues matter most. We have heard about gun safety, abortion rights, fixing the roads, gas prices and more. You can complete this same survey online today — I want to hear what matters to you! Your response will help me understand how we can best work together to move Michigan forward. You can also contact me any time at senseanmccann.com/contact.
