(March\u00a04, 2026) \u2014 <b>Today,<\/b>\u00a0the Senate Committee on Energy and Environment, chaired by Sen. <b>Sean McCann <\/b>(D-Kalamazoo),\u00a0held\u00a0a hearing\u00a0to examine\u00a0how\u00a0skyrocketing\u00a0energy costs\u00a0facing\u00a0Michigan families\u00a0are being\u00a0caused by\u00a0the Trump administration\u2019s\u00a0efforts to\u00a0dismantle\u00a0clean, efficient, and affordable\u00a0energy\u00a0plans.\u00a0Attorney General <b>Dana Nessel<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0other\u00a0energy policy leaders\u00a0shared\u00a0testimony on\u00a0the\u00a0harmful\u00a0\u2014 and costly \u2014\u00a0consequences resulting from the\u00a0extended\u00a0operation\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0J.H. Campbell\u00a0coal plant,\u00a0the\u00a0denial\u00a0of federal\u00a0emergency\u00a0aid following severe ice storms in northern Michigan, and\u00a0the\u00a0financial\u00a0impacts\u00a0from the cancelation of several clean\u00a0energy\u00a0projects under\u00a0the so-called \u201cOne,\u00a0Big,\u00a0Beautiful Bill\u201d\u00a0(OBBA).\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u201cAs the cost of living continues to rise,\u00a0our\u00a0residents need\u00a0real\u00a0relief\u00a0on\u00a0their monthly expenses,\u00a0not\u00a0performative\u00a0energy\u00a0decisions\u00a0that\u00a0leave them\u00a0footing\u00a0the\u00a0bill,\u201d said Sen.<b>\u00a0McCann. <\/b>\u201cAll the\u00a0while, the Trump\u00a0administration\u00a0is\u00a0taking this\u00a0opportunity\u00a0to\u00a0profit,\u00a0while\u00a0people\u00a0nationwide\u00a0continue to\u00a0suffer.\u00a0The belief\u00a0that\u00a0Michigan ratepayers\u00a0deserve\u00a0affordable\u00a0energy\u00a0plans\u00a0or\u00a0utility\u00a0aid in times of emergency\u00a0shouldn\u2019t\u00a0be an outlandish or political statement.\u00a0It also\u00a0shouldn\u2019t\u00a0be something that requires us to spend our time debating.\u00a0But\u00a0as long as\u00a0current leadership\u00a0in Washington\u00a0keeps\u00a0making bad decisions that increase costs and harm consumers, I will keep using this committee\u00a0and state policy\u00a0to fight\u00a0back.\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">Not only\u00a0is\u00a0burning coal <span data-ogsc=\"rgb(5, 99, 193)\"><u><a data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW96325699 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" id=\"OWA8fc385df-ae3a-dbe7-9a9e-d2efd8a6b82a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/coal\/coal-and-the-environment.php\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(5, 99, 193)\" title=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/coal\/coal-and-the-environment.php\" data-outlook-id=\"7ff72848-9ccc-4a43-a30c-056e31e75373\">costly to our environment<\/a><\/u><\/span>, but\u00a0it is also\u00a0expensive to\u00a0maintain.\u00a0Coal generation in 2024 cost\u00a0$6.1 billion\u00a0more than it did in 2021.\u00a0In\u00a0her testimony,\u00a0Attorney General<b>\u00a0Nessel<\/b>\u00a0detailed how\u00a0the\u00a0Trump administration\u2019s involvement in\u00a0dissolving clean, efficient energy plans\u00a0is\u00a0raising prices for\u00a0Michigan\u00a0ratepayers, such\u00a0as through\u00a0the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Dept. of Energy\u2019s\u00a0(DOE)\u00a0continued\u00a0orders\u00a0to\u00a0keep\u00a0the\u00a0J.H. Campbell coal plant\u00a0operational, despite its original\u00a0plans\u00a0to close\u00a0in May of last year.\u00a0While\u00a0the\u00a0retirement\u00a0of the\u00a0Campbell plant\u00a0was slated to save Michigan ratepayers\u00a0nearly $600 million, recent financial\u00a0filings from\u00a0Consumers Energy\u00a0show that prolonging its operation has cost over $135 million through December of last year \u2014 more than $600,000\u00a0a day.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u201cWhether you rent a home, own a small business, or run a large\u00a0corporation, rising\u00a0energy costs harm everyone,\u201d said Michigan Attorney General <b>Dana Nessel<\/b>. \u201cI\u2019d like to thank Chair McCann and the Senate Committee on Energy and Environment for inviting me to speak today on the many federal actions my\u00a0Department\u00a0has engaged in to protect Michigan\u2019s ratepayers and,\u00a0in turn,\u00a0ensure we are investing in clean, renewable energy sources.\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">Across the board,\u00a0Michigan residents are feeling\u00a0financial\u00a0pressure\u00a0from\u00a0Washington\u00a0Republicans\u2019 energy policies.\u00a0Since January\u00a02025, utility costs have increased\u00a0by\u00a013%\u00a0\u2014\u00a0more than four times the rate of inflation. Under the\u00a0OBBA,\u00a0Michigan\u00a0energy\u00a0projects\u00a0were\u00a0canceled or\u00a0postponed,\u00a0resulting in lost\u00a0jobs\u00a0and\u00a0investments.\u00a0Michigan families have been\u00a0particularly burdened.\u00a0The\u00a0Trump\u00a0administration&#8217;s\u00a0OBBA\u00a0has\u00a0directly\u00a0raised costs for Michigan\u00a0households\u00a0and will continue to spike prices.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u201cGenerating electricity with coal is expensive and has been getting more expensive every year,\u201d said <b>Michelle Solomon,<\/b>\u00a0Electricity Manager at Energy Innovation. \u201cNationally, coal power\u2019s cost\u00a0increased 28%\u00a0between 2021 and 2024,\u00a0nearly double\u00a0inflation during the same period, putting inflationary pressure on U.S. electricity prices. In Michigan specifically, our research shows the cost of coal power\u00a0increased by about $10\/MWh, or 29%\u00a0\u2014 costs that were passed directly onto consumer bills.\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">Amid cost increases from\u00a0federal\u00a0energy\u00a0policies, Michigan residents are\u00a0also\u00a0paying the price of one of the most severe ice storms in state history.\u00a0Northern Michigan residents\u00a0are still\u00a0seeking\u00a0needed\u00a0emergency utility aid from grid damage sustained in last spring\u2019s historic ice storm. The three-day storm coated electric and fiber infrastructure with up to 1.5 inches of ice, resulting in over\u00a04,300 miles\u00a0of grid damage and left 200,000 residents experiencing outages. Gov. <b>Gretchen Whitmer<\/b>\u00a0urged the Trump administration to provide utility relief, but they denied the request, calling the needs \u201cunwarranted.\u201d And now,\u00a0Presque\u00a0Isle\u00a0Electric\u00a0&amp;\u00a0Gas Co-op\u00a0ratepayers are paying <span data-ogsc=\"rgb(5, 99, 193)\"><u><a data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW96325699 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" id=\"OWA18676bf1-698a-d71c-2486-db5d70e2ac8a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/ann-arbor\/2025\/09\/michigans-largest-power-co-op-raises-rates-to-pay-for-ice-storm-that-wrecked-grid.html\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(5, 99, 193)\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/ann-arbor\/2025\/09\/michigans-largest-power-co-op-raises-rates-to-pay-for-ice-storm-that-wrecked-grid.html\" data-outlook-id=\"b72b030d-b80f-4e1b-87ae-0ade0501608a\">nearly $20 more<\/a><\/u><\/span>\u00a0on their monthly bill to recoup costs\u00a0because of\u00a0the\u00a0federal government\u2019s\u00a0deliberate inaction.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u201cLast year\u2019s historic ice storm left northern Michigan families in the dark for days,\u201d said <b>Ben Poulson, <\/b>State Government Affairs Director at the Michigan League of Conservation Voters<b>. <\/b>\u201cClimate change is driving more costly storms.
