(June 4, 2026) \u2014 Today, the Senate Committee on Energy and Environment, chaired by Sen. <\/span><b>Sean McCann <\/b><span>(D-Kalamazoo),\u00a0held\u00a0a hearing\u00a0to\u00a0highlight\u00a0how\u00a0the Trump administration\u2019s\u00a0rollbacks to\u00a0clean\u00a0energy and efficiency\u00a0projects\u00a0are costing Michigan farmers.\u00a0The owner of a 250-year-old family farm \u2014 Michigan&#8217;s oldest \u2014 and\u00a0energy industry experts\u00a0shared testimony on\u00a0the\u00a0cancellation of\u00a0renewable energy\u00a0projects and\u00a0grants under the\u00a0federal\u00a0Rural\u00a0Energy\u00a0for\u00a0America Program\u00a0(REAP).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Trump administration continues to remove access to renewable energy improvements that are proven to preserve our environment for generations to come and lower energy costs \u2014 all while pushing forward inefficient, expensive energy plans without any care that our residents, especially our farmers, are now paying the price,\u201d said Sen. <b>McCann.<\/b>\u00a0\u201cI will continue to\u00a0highlight\u00a0how\u00a0these\u00a0rollbacks\u00a0are\u00a0inflating costs for hardworking\u00a0people, harming\u00a0our\u00a0farmers and\u00a0communities statewide. Amid\u00a0the\u00a0record-high cost of living, these decisions\u00a0coming\u00a0out of\u00a0D.C.\u00a0are\u00a0nothing but\u00a0cruel and reckless.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) is administered by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) and provides funding opportunities to rural farms and agribusinesses looking to make their energy more efficient and affordable. Together they represent about $18 million in solar investment, most of it structured around REAP grants covering up to half the project cost,\u201d said <b>Allen Bonthuis, <\/b>Vice President of\u00a0Sales\u00a0and Marketing\u00a0at\u00a0Harvest Solar,<b>\u00a0<\/b>in testimony\u00a0today.\u00a0\u201cOf that, $7.7 million in projects are already complete \u2014 built, energized, and paid for in full by our customers, who are now waiting for a reimbursement that may never come.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe did what the government asked us to do, we relied on the government\u2019s commitment, we made plans of good faith, and for us it\u2019s not easy to absorb that loss,\u201d said <b>Kyle de\u00a0Beausset,<\/b>\u00a0local\u00a0produce\u00a0farmer from Michigan\u2019s oldest farm, in\u00a0testimony\u00a0today. \u201cIt\u00a0was a\u00a0$120,000\u00a0project,\u00a0we would\u2019ve gotten\u00a0$60,000 back, and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0more than the\u00a0revenue\u00a0we\u00a0got for\u00a0last year, so\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not easy.
