MIDLAND, Mich. (August 10, 2023) — Sen. Kristen McDonald Rivet (D-Bay City) issued the following statement after she and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer visited the Longview Early Childhood Center for a roundtable with staff and community partners in Midland. Sen. McDonald Rivet has been working for decades to improve child care and early education in Michigan, including in the 2024 state budget and at a recent summit at the White House.

“Every child deserves a strong start. Our education budget makes big investments in preschool and child care, saving local families thousands of dollars a year. Every step we take to strengthen early childhood education, strengthens our community. As a mom, I understand how vital it is to have a good foundation for our children before kindergarten and we heard that echoed in today’s roundtable.

Governor Whitmer is a tireless champion for Michigan’s kids. Preschool for All will set them up for success while lowering costs for families and getting more young parents into our workforceExpanding Pre-K is an important step but not the only one we need to take. I’m looking forward to working this fall with the Governor, legislative colleagues, community partners, and parents to craft legislation addressing child care needs for parents, providers, and workers.”
