LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Last week was the first week of this year’s lame-duck session. The Senate agenda was incredibly lengthy, and we passed dozens of bills, including a package of bills which cut taxes for fully automated warehouses that Meijer wants to build (eliminating traditional warehouse worker jobs – bills that passed despite my opposition), and that change the definition of mixed spirit drinks for retail and distribution.

Unfortunately, we did not take up even ONE bill to address the continuing spread of COVID-19 head-on.

We have six session days left on our session calendar this year. As we face one of the worst surges of this pandemic, with small businesses on the brink, hospitals at or near capacity, and residents with bills to pay as unemployment benefits are set to expire soon, my sincere hope is that legislative leadership puts everything else aside to focus on addressing this crisis.
