LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Election Bills

Last week, Senate GOP once again pushed bills, Senate Bills 303 and 304, under the guise of “election integrity” that would do nothing but make it harder to vote, and further challenged us on what measures we would support — which implies that our election system is somehow insecure.

That premise is 100% false.

And while a bill waiving the fee to obtain a state ID is a good idea on its face, the GOP rejected my amendment to ensure appropriate funding to the bill and kept a tie-bar to a bill that mirrors their coming voter suppression petition initiative.

That said, the Senate Majority Leader penned an op-ed this past April saying we should ensure everyone has a state ID — and included some excellent ideas for how to accomplish that. None of those ideas were funded.

He concluded his op-ed by saying, “As leaders, we have an obligation to do all we can to identify and remove government-created obstacles for all Michigan citizens in their pursuit of happiness.” And I 100% agree, which is exactly what these voter suppression bills are. Hurdles.

I voted against these bills. You can watch my full remarks here.

Environmental Protection Bill

Earlier this year, high school freshman Nisha Singhi presented a bill idea to me that she developed alongside the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability grad students to tackle one of the issues contributing to the buildup of dangerous microplastics and debris in our Great Lakes. Last week I introduced her idea as Senate Bill 675, which would prohibit the release of balloons.

Nisha was able to join us in Lansing and shadow Rep. Mari Manoogian, and also had the opportunity to see her bill introduced in both the House and Senate.

You can watch my speech on Senate Bill 675 here.

Prevailing Wage

Last Thursday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that the State of Michigan will require state contractors and subcontractors to pay prevailing wages for construction projects. This move reinstates the prevailing wage requirement, which was repealed in June 2018, and ensures that any construction worker working on a state construction project receives a fair wage. Paying workers fair union wages is just good policy.
