Specialty license plate options are available now thanks to McMorrow legislation to help generate revenue, emphasize Michigan’s car culture
LANSING, Mich. (Feb. 4, 2025) — Thanks to enthusiastic advocacy from Michigan drivers and corresponding legislative efforts by Sen. Mallory McMorrow (D-Royal Oak), additional specialty plates are now available through the Secretary of State to help add a bit of nostalgia and retro cool to your vehicles. After several years of work by Sen. McMorrow, last session, the Michigan Legislature passed bills to allow the Secretary of State to readminister the blue license plates Michigan used from 1983 until 2007, as well as the black plates issued between 1979 and 1983.
“Michiganders love our cars and they’re part of our identity and expression. That was clear with the requests I heard to bring these throwback license plates back, and the excitement that’s come with finally making it happen,” said Sen. McMorrow. “Expanding the retro plates available to drivers is a way to add a custom touch and harken back to other eras, all while generating revenue and improving our roads to ensure everyone has a smoother ride.”
Under Sen. McMorrow’s legislation, the blue and black license plates are now available to all Michiganders. They can be purchased for an additional fee, either when buying a vehicle through a dealership or through the Secretary of State online or at an office near you. And the revenue generated from the retro plates will go to the state’s transportation fund and help repair the state’s roads. This provides drivers with a great opportunity to celebrate our unparalleled car culture while helping fix a few more potholes.
