In response to devastating flooding across the state, legislation would address Michigan’s outdated dam infrastructure

LANSING, Mich. (May 22, 2026) — Yesterday, the Senate Committee on Energy and Environment, chaired by Sen. Sean McCann (D-Kalamazoo), heard testimony on crucial legislation to address devastating flooding and dam failures statewide. Senate Bill 947, sponsored by Sen. Mallory McMorrow (D-Royal Oak), would strengthen the state’s aging dams through increased regulatory requirements and inspections. Senate Bill 627, sponsored by Sen. Jon Bumstead (R-Norton Shores), would increase Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) oversight of the possible sale of energy-producing hydroelectric dams and transfers to non-utility entities, ensuring continued safe operations.

“Updating our aging infrastructure is a critical need and should be a bipartisan affair. As storms and less predictable weather continue to increase, we must ensure we have strong, efficient dams to safeguard our waterfront communities and ecosystems from devastating flood damage,” said Sen. McCann, an advocate for dam improvements in his district and throughout the state. “I am hopeful to see these protections advance and properly shield our residents from the current danger of aging dams.”

Senate Bills 947 and 627 remain in the Senate Committee on Energy and Environment for further deliberation.
