(April 22, 2026) \u2014 Today,\u00a0the\u00a0Michigan\u00a0Senate passed\u00a0Senate Bill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0481\" target=\"_blank\" id=\"OWA59fcb31d-d98e-1fac-c779-ff2dcbc2b3d1\" class=\"Hyperlink SCXW147072641 BCX0 OWAAutoLink\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(5, 99, 193)\" title=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0481\" data-outlook-id=\"dafe4d76-5242-4d55-861a-54f7bfdd1108\"><u>481<\/u><\/a>,\u00a0bipartisan legislation sponsored by\u00a0Sen. <b>Mallory McMorrow <\/b>(D-Royal Oak)\u00a0to\u00a0tackle\u00a0human trafficking\u00a0by requiring every hotel,\u00a0motel, and short-term\u00a0rental\u00a0in the\u00a0state\u00a0to prominently display the\u00a0hotline number for the\u00a0National Human Trafficking Resource Center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;One sign. One number. This legislation is simple, straight-forward, and will save lives,\u201d said Sen. <\/span><b>McMorrow<\/b><span>.\u00a0\u201cJust as\u00a0the display of this hotline number is\u00a0already\u00a0required\u00a0at rest areas, airports, and adult entertainment venues,\u00a0every lodging facility in the state\u00a0should be sending the same message: <\/span><i>we\u00a0see you;\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0watching;\u00a0and help is available<\/i><span>.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0the message\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0sending by passing\u00a0this critical\u00a0bill\u00a0with\u00a0near\u00a0unanimous\u00a0support\u00a0from\u00a0the Michigan Senate, and\u00a0I\u00a0hope\u00a0our\u00a0House\u00a0colleagues\u00a0will\u00a0follow our\u00a0lead\u00a0and\u00a0help us get this across the finish line.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Home to\u00a0several high-profile events and\u00a0positioned at the intersection of many highway corridors and\u00a0international\u00a0crossing points,\u00a0Michigan is a unique target for\u00a0human traffickers.\u00a0This\u00a0legislation would help victims connect with critical support while also signaling to traffickers\u00a0that Michigan\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0a place that will let them get away with their\u00a0exploitive\u00a0criminal enterprise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs a member of the Detroit Human Trafficking Task Force and a clinician working directly with survivors, I\u2019ve seen how small points of access can make the difference between continued exploitation and a moment of escape,\u201d said <b>Amy Smith<\/b>, Director of Healing Services, Avalon Healing Center,\u00a0who also serves as the\u00a0Secretary for the Detroit Human Trafficking Task Force. \u201cRequiring hotline signage in lodging facilities is a simple but powerful step\u2014one that increases visibility, creates opportunity, and sends a clear message that Michigan is not a safe place for traffickers. Access saves lives. Something as simple as a posted number can create a moment of opportunity for someone who has none.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHuman trafficking has been found in every zip code in Michigan, which makes this a statewide responsibility,\u201d said\u00a0<b>Angela Whitfield-Calloway<\/b>, Councilwoman for Detroit\u2019s District 2.\u00a0\u201cSenate Bill 481 builds on the work we started in Detroit through the Human Trafficking Task Force and takes a proven local solution and makes it a statewide standard.
