LANSING – Sen. Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) issued the following statement after sponsoring Senate Bill 478 today as part of a robust legislative package to crack down on payroll and tax fraud:
“No one wants their wages robbed after working hard to make an honest living. That’s why I’m standing with Michigan workers, including the many who struggle to make ends meet as a direct result of payroll fraud. We need the tools to go after the bad actors who refuse to follow the simple rules of doing business and instead cheat working families from their earned pay.”
One in five Michigan households have been impacted by payroll fraud, which resulted in Michigan workers losing out on $429 million over a two-year period, according to the Economic Policy Institute. In April, Attorney General Dana Nessel created a special unit in her office to handle complaints of payroll fraud, which includes instances of wage theft, lack of overtime pay or misclassifying workers as independent contractors rather than employees.
If you or someone you know suspect payroll fraud, please call the Payroll Fraud Hotline in the Attorney General’s office at (833) 221-1099 or visit the Attorney General’s website on the issue.
