LANSING — Sen. Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) and Rep. Jim Ellison (D-Royal Oak), who both represent Madison Heights in the State Legislature, have issued the following statement after the Michigan Senate passed a supplemental budget for Fiscal Year 2019-2020, which includes $600,000 in funding for the demolition of the Electro-Plating Services site:
“The only way to fully remediate the decades-long contamination at Electro-Plating Services is to tear the building down. I toured the building and it’s not just a disgusting eyesore, but it prevents cleanup workers from removing the toxic chemicals beneath it. Rep. Ellison and I worked closely with the Governor’s office to secure the funding to begin the demolition process so that the residents of Madison Heights and surrounding areas are finally rid of green ooze,” Sen. Moss said.
“While the owner sits in jail for his failure to properly store and dispose of the waste, those chemicals remain a threat to our community until the site is fully cleaned up. This $600,000 appropriation is a necessary step toward the full remediation,” Rep. Ellison said. “Demolishing and properly disposing of the contaminated walls and building materials so that the soil beneath and around the building can be removed is the only way we can fully protect our ground and surface water from the toxic materials.”
