LANSING, Mich. (Dec. 14, 2021) — Sen. Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) issued the following statement after the Michigan Legislature passed House Bill 5351 today, further chipping away at tax revenue that funds local municipalities to pay for essential services such as public safety, roads, infrastructure, and more:

“Those who pay taxes expect police and fire to arrive during an emergency and road crews to restore our crumbling infrastructure. By further repealing the personal property tax without a long-term replacement, the majority in the Legislature continues to threaten the sustainability of our local governments to provide for the essential services back home that we all depend upon. That’s why I voted against this bill.

“The Legislature must view our local communities as partners, not competitors — and certainly not enemies. Their success is our success, and our shared constituents win when we all succeed. I’m hopeful to be engaged in thoughtful discussions in the new year to fully and permanently replace any lost revenue due to this vote.”
