LANSING, Mich. (November 8, 2023) — Sen. Jeremy Moss (D–Southfield) issued the following statement regarding the passage of House Bill 4292, which includes $18.3 million to eliminate school debt for the Pontiac School District — helping to free up additional resources in its operating budget to best serve the needs of students:

“After tirelessly advocating for debt relief for the Pontiac School District, I was proud to support House Bill 4292 and send it to the Governor’s desk. This legislation ensures that the funding for our schools is directed to resources and opportunities in the classroom that are vital to providing students with the adequate education they rightfully deserve. Pontiac has been overlooked for too long, and this support from the state — in addition to funding for downtown development and critical infrastructure that we fought to include in our fiscal budget — reverses the years disinvestment.”

The funds were appropriated as part of a $115 million School Aid supplemental funding bill that provides debt relief to local school districts affected by financial emergencies, dissolution or consolidation. This supplemental bill comes after the Senate passed a transformational budget in June 2023 that made historic investments in education, infrastructure, job retention programs, housing, clean water and more.
