LANSING – Sen. Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) has issued the following statement about the Senate’s passage of various state budgets today:
“Many of the budget bills fell woefully short of ensuring our state government’s core functions serve Michigan residents in a fair, just and equitable way.
“Some of our most systemic challenges like homelessness, poverty, and economic security could be improved if not for the continued underfunding of community mental health and basic infrastructure. When our budget is shortchanged, it threatens the abilities of our Attorney General to hold bad actors accountable, our Department of Civil Rights to fully protect one’s civil liberties, and our Secretary of State to adequately serve residents in branch offices. In these Republican-sponsored budgets, we could have done better.
“We have an incredible opportunity to make Michigan better for everyone — not just the few — and it is my hope that we may continue to work on enacting stronger policies in legislation outside of the proposals today. Money that should be going to local communities in Southern Oakland County should not be used to plug holes in the state budget, and for this reason, among many others, I could not support much of what passed in the Senate today.”
