Legislators Announce Bills for Universal Background Checks on Guns

May 17, 2021

Sens. Rosemary Bayer (D–Beverly Hills), Stephanie Chang (D–Detroit) and Jeremy Moss (D–Southfield), along with Reps. Felicia Brabec (D–Pittsfield), Brenda Carter (D–Pontiac) and Regina Weiss (D-Oak Park), today announced a bill package to expand universal background checks for guns to include all types of firearms.

Currently, Michigan law only requires background checks for pistols.

“The impact of gun violence touches all of our communities, but the Legislature cannot continue to act as if there is nothing we can do about it — especially when proven measures like universal background checks could help keep guns out of the wrong hands,” Sen. Moss said. “These are common-sense bills that most Americans support to prevent the next tragedy from occurring. Our colleagues must join us to pass these reforms to keep everyone in each of our districts safe.”

Governor Whitmer Signs Mixed Spirits Package to Create Jobs and Support Michigan Small Businesse

May 24, 2021

Governor Whitmer signed Senate Bill 141, Senate Bill 142, Senate Bill 143 and Senate Bill 144, which will make it easier for distillers and retailers to distribute and sell mixed spirit drinks, offering consumers more choices and growing our economy.

“We have innovative distillers here in Michigan who are making products that are increasing in popularity, but the law needed to catch up to allow this growing industry to succeed,” Sen. Jeremy Moss said. “I was proud to work on this bipartisan legislation that removes burdensome barriers to enter into the market while still safely regulating these products for consumers. Cheers to Gov. Whitmer for signing our bills into law.”

Sen. Moss on Judiciary Committee Hearing about Police Improvement Bills

May 27, 2021

Sen. Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) has issued the following statement after his bill, Senate Bill 474, received a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee this morning as part of a larger, bipartisan, 12-bill police improvement package announced on Tuesday

“Our police departments can only keep our communities safe if our constituents trust those who are hired to protect them. We must ensure that bad cops who repeatedly and dangerously breech policy are removed from the force, rather than allowing them to transfer across jurisdictions to soil another department. When officers leave one law enforcement agency for another, my bill requires that the separation reports detailing why they left include any use of force violations, so agencies have another tool to maintain the integrity of their force.”

Sen. Moss, Rep. Weiss Call for Safe Return of Danny Fenster

June 2, 2021

Sen. Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) and Rep. Regina Weiss (D-Oak Park) issued the following statement calling for the safe return of Daniel Fenster, a Michigan native and American journalist, who was detained in Myanmar on May 24 while traveling home to Huntington Woods.

“Journalism is not a crime. Our freedom of press ensures the security of journalists here at home, and it must also compel us to extol those virtues around the globe. As a nation that is deeply committed to protecting the freedoms, safety, and human rights of its citizens, U.S. officials should be making every effort to ensure that Danny is returned home safely, immediately, and unconditionally,” Sen. Moss said.
