LANSING – Sen. Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) has issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision not to provide ruling or guidance on extreme partisan gerrymandering, and to allow one-sided maps to remain in place:
“Gerrymandering disrupts a functioning democracy. With the Supreme Court refusing to remedy political gerrymandering, it’s my hope that our independent commission will be a model for the country. I’m glad Michigan took the necessary steps before this disappointing decision, but I’m dismayed the Court abandoned its duty given its critical role in our system of government.
“I’ve long been committed to ensuring our government is of, by, and for the people of Michigan and look forward to a transparent process of creating balanced maps play out through Michigan’s Citizens Redistricting Commission.”
As a state representative, Sen. Moss had previously introduced legislation during his two terms to create a nonpartisan commission to oversee the drawing of political boundaries. The application to be on Michigan’s new 2020 Citizens Redistricting Commission will be available by the end of this year to draw new lines for 2022.
