LANSING — Sen. Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) issued the following statement regarding the recent signing of three of his bills into law in less than two weeks by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer:

“I was sent to the Legislature by my constituents to work on the issues that matter to all of us: boosting our economy, strengthening public education, and increasing property values. Each of these bills have one thing in common — to make Michigan a better place to live and work.

“I’m grateful that my colleagues in the House and Senate recognize the importance of these issues and I thank Gov. Whitmer for her dedication to the tangible issues that people really care about. I’ll continue to work to pass legislation that provides Michiganders with opportunities to enjoy all our state has to offer.”

Sen. Moss’s bills signed by the governor include:

  • Senate Bill 319 (now Public Act 3 of 2020) expands the criteria for existing Neighborhood Enterprise Zones, allowing residents in distressed areas to receive reduced property taxes or have assessments frozen, while construction and rehabilitation of existing residential properties takes place;
  • Senate Bill 651 (now Public Act 23 of 2020) is part of a two-bill package to continue the Dropout Recovery Program enabling public school districts in Michigan to assist students with completing their high school degree after dropping out of school; and,
  • Senate Bill 588 (Public Act 26 of 2020) is part of a three-bill package that sets up the framework to promote spirits tasting festivals and events, specifically allowing certain retailers who sell liquor to accept returns of products purchased by special licensees.
