New Maps, New District<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Michigan\u2019s new 7th Senate District includes the communities of Auburn Hills, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Lake Angelus, Lathrup Village, Pontiac, Southfield, and parts of Detroit, Southfield Township, and Waterford Township.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Historic New Majority<\/h2>\n

I want to acknowledge the historic nature of our new Michigan Legislature for the 2023-2024 term. Democrats will control the House, Senate and Executive Branch all at once for the first time in nearly 40 years.<\/p>\n

My colleagues and I are excited for this moment to lead Michigan toward a future that is more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous for all.<\/p>\n

Democrats highlighted a series of bills that refl ect shared priorities to put Michigan families first. The new majority is ready to tackle the real challenges Michiganders face by creating and implementing an agenda that is based on listening to their needs.<\/p>\n

Senate Bill 1<\/strong> Repeal the unfair and unpopular retirement tax on Michigan seniors<\/p>\n

Senate Bill 2<\/strong> Repeal the state\u2019s 1931 statute criminalizing abortion<\/p>\n

Senate Bill 3<\/strong> Enable workers to keep their hard-earned dollars by increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)<\/p>\n

Senate Bill 4<\/strong> Expand the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include sexual orientation and gender identity or expression as a protected class<\/p>\n

Senate Bill 5<\/strong> Restore workers\u2019 rights by repealing the so-called \u201cRight to Work\u201d policy<\/p>\n

Senate Bill 6<\/strong> Restore the state\u2019s prevailing wage law<\/p>\n

CLOSING THE FUNDING GAP IN EDUCATION<\/h2>\n

In 2021, Democrats led the way to close the per-pupil funding gap between our state\u2019s most affluent and most challenged school districts, an investment that lawmakers, school administrators, teachers, and advocates worked to achieve for nearly 30 years.<\/p>\n

This historic $17 billion K-12 budget will enable all students, regardless of their ZIP code, to acquire the advanced skills and knowledge needed to compete for jobs in an ever-changing economy. We know that when our students succeed, our state succeeds.<\/p>\n

Connecting Residents with Jobs, Education<\/h4>\n

I voted to create the Michigan Reconnect program, an increasingly popular option for Michiganders to update their skillset or even learn a new one.
\nTo be eligible, you must:<\/b>
\n\u2022 Be at least 25 years old when you apply
\n\u2022 Have lived in Michigan for a year or more
\n\u2022 Have a high school diploma or equivalent
\n\u2022 Have not yet completed a college degree (associate or bachelor\u2019s)I also helped create a scholarship program in Michigan to assist with covering the cost
\nof higher education. Known as the Michigan Achievement Scholarship and beginning with the Class of 2023, high school graduates will be eligible for more financial aid from
\nthe start, up to:<\/p>\n

\u2022 $2,750 per year, if attending community college, for up to three years
\n\u2022 $5,500 per year, if attending a public university, for up to five years

Creating an open records law that allows you, the public, to access the inner workings of state government and bringing Michigan in line with the majority of other states that allow residents to submit FOIA requests to the Legislature and the governor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

Price Gouging<\/strong>
Protecting residents from being unfairly charged for essential goods and services during a state of emergency or everyday items like groceries and gas.<\/p>\n

Polluter Pay<\/strong>
Preventing corporate polluters from getting away with contaminating our water, land, and air and sticking taxpayers with the cleanup bill.<\/p>\n

Free and Fair Elections<\/strong>
Increasing access to the ballot, reducing barriers to voting, and restoring honesty in politics.<\/p>\n

Police Reform<\/strong>
Requiring training, oversight, and accountability that builds trust between law enforcement and residents.<\/p>\n

LGBTQ Rights<\/strong>
Combatting discrimination in housing, employment, and publicly available services based on a Michigander\u2019s sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.<\/p>\n

Gun Safety<\/strong>
Pushing for common sense reform to reduce gun death and injuries in our communities.<\/p>\n
