(Jan. 29, 2025) \u2014 Today, the Senate passed bipartisan legislation to expand Michigan\u2019s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and subject the Legislature and governor\u2019s office to records requests from the public. Senate Bills <span><u><a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW76812435 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" id=\"OWA43f7b45a-1b59-fe54-ca70-8b33a2c5d6fb\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0001\" title=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0001\" data-linkindex=\"1\">1<\/a><\/u><\/span> and <span><u><a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW76812435 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" id=\"OWA0731eadc-bb5e-4184-71a0-5526be43d545\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0002\" title=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0002\" data-linkindex=\"2\">2<\/a><\/u><\/span>, sponsored by Sens.<b> Jeremy Moss<\/b> (D-Southfield) and <b>Ed McBroom<\/b> (R-Waucedah Twp.), were prioritized as the first votes of the new legislative session and passed nearly unanimously by a 33-2 margin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s outrageous that Michigan is nearly alone in the country in blocking the public from accessing the documents from the governor and State Legislature. For the last 10 years, I\u2019ve been working to strengthen FOIA and give our residents more tools to shine light on the inner workings of state government,\u201d said Sen.<b> Moss<\/b>. \u201cIt should not take another 10 years for the Legislature to do the right thing for our constituents. Today, the Senate has done its part \u2014 now it\u2019s up to the House to take action for the people of Michigan and ensure a more transparent government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michigan\u2019s FOIA law, enacted in 1976, remains one of the few in the nation that exempts state lawmakers and the governor\u2019s office from public records requests. Last year, the Senate passed <span><u><a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW76812435 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" id=\"OWA95173958-751d-59dc-dfb9-ade59b5b74f5\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/moss\/2024\/06\/26\/foia\/\" title=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/moss\/2024\/06\/26\/foia\/\" data-linkindex=\"3\">similar legislation<\/a><\/u><\/span> to amend FOIA, but the bills were not taken up in the House.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransparency is imperative to an open, honest government that fosters public trust,\u201d said Senate Majority Leader <b>Winnie Brinks <\/b>(D-Grand Rapids). \u201cWe\u2019ve been fighting for over a decade to bring greater transparency to Michigan\u2019s executive and legislative branches. During that decade, we have seen countless situations where access to open records could have allowed residents to hold their elected officials accountable, and in that same amount of time, I have not heard one good reason why we shouldn\u2019t permit public information requests. For all of us, this should be an easy \u2018yes,\u2019 and I expect to see swift passage in the House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the National Center for Public Integrity\u2019s <span><u><a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW76812435 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" id=\"OWAdc2a9b3a-2550-8e0c-063d-897871de68df\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/publicintegrity.org\/politics\/state-politics\/state-integrity-investigation\/michigan-gets-f-grade-in-2015-state-integrity-investigation\/\" title=\"https:\/\/publicintegrity.org\/politics\/state-politics\/state-integrity-investigation\/michigan-gets-f-grade-in-2015-state-integrity-investigation\/\" data-linkindex=\"4\">2015 report<\/a><\/u><\/span>, Michigan received an \u201cF\u201d in government integrity \u2014 the last in the nation. Michigan failed in 10 of 13 categories, including public access to information, executive accountability, and legislative accountability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people of the state need tools to hold their elected officials accountable,\u201d said Sen. <b>McBroom<\/b>. \u201cThese bills make a great step forward for that accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senate Bills 1 and 2 now await action in the House.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" style=\"text-align: center;\">###<\/div>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LANSING, Mich.
