In my last year in the Michigan Senate, I am looking forward to serving you and our community at the Capitol, addressing the challenges our residents are facing both in our backyard and across the state.<\/p>\n
With lots of exciting work already underway this year, I want to reflect on some of the important progress made and victories won in 2025 and the ways in which we\u2019ll build on this legislation in the coming months.<\/p>\n
From protecting access to health care, securing record investments in public education, and more, my colleagues and I fought for you every step of the way.<\/p>\n
And we are continuing to do so in 2026. But Michigan\u2019s law specifically exempts state lawmakers and the governor\u2019s office from the act, blocking you from fully understanding the decisions from your state government \u2014 one of the few states in the country with these egregious exemptions.<\/p>\n After working for a decade to increase government transparency, the Senate finally passed my bipartisan legislation in 2025 to expand FOIA in Michigan to all of state government. The Speaker of the House, however, has publicly stated he refuses to take them up and continues to block state files from public scrutiny. Nonetheless, I will continue to push this legislation across the finish line to provide the taxpayers of Michigan with the integrity and accountability they deserve from their elected officials.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_text=”Learn More” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” button_url=”https:\/\/senatedems.com\/moss\/2026\/01\/30\/transparency-2\/” url_new_window=”on” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][\/et_pb_button][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” type=”1_2″ theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″] Rx Kids is the nation\u2019s first prenatal and infant cash prescription program proven to support moms and babies. We helped provide budget funding to launch the program in Pontiac and Detroit and expand it to other parts of the state. Most recently, we fought hard to successfully secure a landmark investment of $270 million <\/span>to further expand Rx Kids. Over the next three years, this funding is expected to reach nearly 100,000<\/span> babies, representing approximately one-third of all births in Michigan.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_text=”Learn More” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” button_url=”https:\/\/rxkids.org” url_new_window=”on” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][\/et_pb_button][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″] With significant victories in the state budget, we were able to counteract some of the worst impacts of the \u201cOne Big Beautiful Bill\u201d \u2014 like avoiding a one billion dollar hit to Michigan. We undid tax breaks for wealthy corporations, protected food assistance benefits like SNAP, and saved Medicaid in Michigan, halting what was sure to be a catastrophic domino effect felt statewide.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_text=”Learn More” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” button_url=”https:\/\/senatedems.com\/blog\/2025\/10\/30\/food-access\/” url_new_window=”on” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][\/et_pb_button][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” type=”1_2″ theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″] The cost of living just seems to be getting more and more expensive, and between housing, groceries, child care, and doctors\u2019 visits, the costs add up quickly.<\/p>\n That\u2019s why one of the first actions I took in the Senate Majority was to pass the biggest tax relief initiative Michigan has seen in decades, which cut taxes by $1 billion by repealing the retirement tax and expanding tax credits for working families. But our work didn\u2019t stop there! As part of our bipartisan 2026 state budget, we eliminated state taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security, so you can keep more of your hard-earned paycheck.<\/p>\n What does this look like in action?<\/p>\n As Chair of the Senate Elections Committee, a top priority of mine is to ensure all eligible citizens can exercise their right to vote.<\/p>\n As we head towards another important election cycle, I will continue to prioritize legislation that ensures safe, secure elections for our voters and local clerks that make our elections possible. One way we can achieve this is with my legislation that would establish a Michigan Voting Rights Act to uphold the integrity of the state\u2019s election process, making sure voters are both physically and legally protected and accommodated, and local election officials comply with state laws.<\/p>\n
