LANSING, Mich. (Feb. 9, 2022) — Sen. Dayna Polehanki (D-Livonia) has issued the following statement regarding today’s executive budget recommendation for the upcoming fiscal year, which includes significant investments in education, including teacher retention and recruitment:

“One of the pandemic’s hardest hit sectors of our society is our schools, and it is clear from her budget proposal the governor knows this, too. I have and will continue to work tirelessly to ensure our teachers have everything they need to do their jobs safely and effectively, and it helps knowing we have an ally in those efforts in Governor Whitmer. To recruit and maintain quality teachers, we must show them as much by making investments in them.”

If passed as written, the governor’s proposed budget would once again mark the biggest state education funding increase in more than 20 years — without raising taxes — by providing extra, necessary attention and funding toward increasing per-pupil and special education funding, respectively, as well as a $2.3 billion investment to aid teacher retention and recruitment.
