LANSING, Mich. (Jan. 11, 2023) — Sen. Dayna Polehanki (D-Livonia), the Michigan Senate  Majority  Caucus Chair, has issued the following statement after being sworn into office to serve in the 102nd Michigan Legislature:

“I am thrilled to be a part of this historic state Legislature, which includes the first woman to lead the Michigan Senate as majority leader,” Sen. Polehanki said. “Democrats are committed to making Michigan a more just, equitable and sustainable state for all. I’m eager to get to work with such a diverse and experienced group of colleagues who are also excited for the opportunity before us.”

Sen. Polehanki represents the 5th Senate District, which includes part of Livonia and all of Canton Township, Garden City, Inkster, and Westland. She is a vocal proponent of public schools, teachers, and students, a two-time Teacher of the Year award winner, and has nearly 20 years of experience in the classroom. She lives in Livonia with her husband, Jim, and her dog, Frankie.

“I met and fell in love with a high school English teacher named ‘Dayna’ 18 years ago,” said Jim Walkup, Sen. Polehanki’s husband. “While I know she enjoyed teaching, seeing her thrive in this new role as a state senator is really gratifying. Her passion for helping teachers and students is genuine, and I would say that people should ‘buckle up,’ because now that she is in the majority, there’s going to be no stopping her from doing everything she can to help public education.”
