INKSTER, Mich. (Nov. 10, 2025) — Last week, the Wayne County Commission approved a $7.5 million contract with Michigan State University to expand the widely successful, evidence-based Rx Kids program to six Wayne County cities, including Inkster. Rx Kids is the nation’s first community-wide, no-strings-attached cash prescription program for pregnant moms and infants. Rx Kids proves successful in alleviating poverty rates and improving health outcomes. Michigan Senate Democrats championed a $270 million investment in the recently passed state budget to expand the program to several communities across the state.
Sen. Dayna Polehanki (D-Livonia) — a former educator — has been a longstanding advocate for Michigan youth. Sen. Polehanki has released the following statement in response to Wayne County’s recent expansion of the program:
“Inkster is a community that deserves bold, innovative support for families,” said Sen. Polehanki. “This program is a powerful step toward ensuring every baby gets a strong start in life, regardless of zip code. By investing directly in moms and newborns, Rx Kids is helping build a healthier, more equitable future for our children, and I’m honored to support its expansion in my district.”
