LIVONIA, Mich. (Jan. 26, 2022) — Sen. Dayna Polehanki (D-Livonia) issued the following statement on Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s State of the State address, in which she spoke about her plans to lower the price of prescription medications, such as insulin, and prevent issues like price gouging from affecting the price of medication:
“Prescription drugs such as insulin aren’t a luxury — they are a necessity. The fact that so many Michiganders are choosing between medicine and rent is abhorrent, and I’m glad to see Governor Whitmer address this immoral dilemma that too many Michiganders are facing in Wayne County and all over the state.
“Issues like price gouging and the expense of health care prevent people from being able to easily access the medical care they need, and these are barriers that need to be removed. We have to come together and create a system to hold those who are responsible for unnecessarily overcharging for prescriptions accountable, ensure that medication is equitably made available to those who need it, and work to provide health care options that do not consistently cause financial stress upon individuals or families. Those who live with a chronic illness should not be so financially burdened by their medication that it cripples them in other aspects of their lives, which is why this is an issue that is critical to act upon.”
