LANSING, Mich. (April 15, 2021) — Sen. Dayna Polehanki (D-Livonia) has issued the following statement in support of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Michigan Jobs First Executive Directive, which is designed to ensure fair and equitable wages and benefits for Michigan workers when companies bid for state contracts:

“I am thrilled to see Gov. Gretchen Whitmer lead by example in ensuring state contracts only be awarded to the best, most ethical companies who put employees and their families first. Now, more than ever, we cannot allow businesses who cut corners, legally or ethically, to benefit while hardworking Michiganders don’t get their fair shake. The people of Michigan deserve fair, competitive wages and benefits, and Michigan Jobs First is a positive step in that direction.”

Key provisions of the executive directive would require companies who bid on state contracts to:

  • Disclose all relevant records, including information on their labor and environmental compliance.
  • Certify that their workforce is accurately classified as employees, and not independent contractors or 1099 workers.
  • Include information on the likely economic impact of the project they seek to complete.
