“According to the Education Commission of the States, 17 states and the District of Columbia require some form of mandatory kindergarten.
Bill sponsor Senator Dayna Polehanki (D-Livonia) hopes Michigan joins that group of state as Governor Gretchen Whitmer pushes for free preschool.
“If we’re going to move toward universal pre-k, it’s a good idea that kids don’t skip kindergarten,” Sen. Polehanki pointed out.
The state currently projects approximately 95 percent of Michigan five-year-olds are already enrolled in kindergarten.

Thank you, Dayna! As a long time early elementary teacher, I can tell you this is super important. It means all children will begin 1st grade on equal footing with the skills they need to succeed.
I was in Pre-K in the 80s. I loved it as a kid. We focused mainly on reading, motor skills, hygiene, and how to respect each other. I don't know what it's like now. I can't imagine it hindering growth in any way. If anything it instilled in me a love for reading that has continued to this day.
