(Jan. 31, 2023) \u2014 Sen. <b>Dayna Polehanki<\/b> (D-Livonia) joined the Senate in passing <\/span><\/span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2023-SB-0001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"1\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">Senate Bill 1<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span> and <\/span><\/span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2023-SB-0003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"2\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">Senate Bill 3<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span> last week. SB 1, which would provide much-needed tax relief to seniors, and SB 3, which would increase the state\u2019s match of the federal earned income tax credit from 6 percent to 30 percent, put hard-earned money back into the pockets of Michiganders across the state. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span>\u201cFor years, Michigan seniors have struggled to pay for a surprise tax hike and had the promise of a secure retirement broken by the leaders they trusted,\u201d said Sen. Polehanki. \u201cThis bill enables more seniors to live, work, and retire with dignity in this state.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span>SB 1 would repeal the unpopular retirement tax, allowing senior citizens in Michigan to use their money saved for retirement without being taxed.\u00a0The legislation increases the deduction that senior taxpayers may claim each year, ultimately undoing the punitive and partisan tax on pensions enacted in 2012. Senior taxpayers will\u00a0also\u00a0have the option to use the pre-2012 tax system\u00a0if it is more beneficial to them.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span>\u201cEven before the pandemic, nearly half of the households in our state were unable to pay for basic needs like housing, food, childcare, and transportation, and many of our fellow Michiganders are still struggling today,\u201d added Sen. Polehanki. \u201cBy expanding the Working Families Tax Credit, we are giving more money directly back to the hardworking residents who need it most and offering them some concrete, immediate relief from inflation and the most pressing expenses in their daily lives.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span>The Working Families Tax Credit, SB 3, would increase the state\u2019s match of the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) from 6 percent to 30 percent. This\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganfoundations.org\/news\/new-kids-count-michigan-data-underscores-need-make-covid-era-policies-permanent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"3\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">30 percent match of the federal EITC would return around $553 million to local economies and small businesses<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span>\u00a0and benefit nearly\u00a0750,000 Michigan workers.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span>Additionally, it contains a provision that makes this increase retroactive to the 2022 tax year, which would give working families the ability to take this credit in this year\u2019s tax filing.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span>These policies are not only providing immediate and targeted support for struggling residents, but doing so through proven, bipartisan and widely embraced policies. Over 230 organizations have signed <\/span><\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/mcdonaldrivet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2023\/01\/EITC-Coalition-Letter-to-Legislature.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"4\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">a letter<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span> urging Michigan\u2019s legislative and executive branches to adopt a 30 percent match of the federal EITC, citing it as a \u201cpro-work\u201d policy with immediate impact to boost local purchasing power.
