Not One More.
In less than 24 hours, our nation witnessed two mass shootings and the loss of at least 31 lives. This must end.
Seventeen other states and the District of Columbia have enacted common-sense gun reforms such as ‘red flag’ laws that temporarily prevent someone in crisis from buying or possessing a gun, while respecting our Constitutional rights.
We can and we must come together to work across the aisle on common-sense solutions that begin to prevent gun violence.
Legislation exists in both the Michigan House and Senate to make these reforms, but they have been stalled in the House Judiciary Committee and Senate Government Operations Committee, respectively:
House Bill 4283 / Senate Bill 156: Create the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act enabling courts to temporarily prohibit a person from possessing guns if law enforcement or an immediate family member demonstrates the person poses a significant danger to themselves or others.
House Bill 4284 / Senate Bill 157: Prohibit the purchase of a firearm if an individual has an Extreme Risk Protection Order.
House Bill 4285 / Senate Bill 158: Enact sentencing guidelines for making a false statement in support of an Extreme Risk Protection Order.
I support these bills getting a hearing:
Every Michigander deserves a safe community — from our schools to our places of worship, movie theaters, shopping malls, public events, and more. I urge Committee Chairs to give these bills a committee hearing now.
