A portion of a Dearborn highway would be renamed after the late U.S. Rep. John Dingell, Jr., the longest-serving member of Congress in U.S. history, under legislation introduced in the Michigan Senate this week.
The bill, Senate Bill 387, would rename part of US-24 that runs through the city of Dearborn as the “John D. Dingell, Jr. Memorial Highway” in Dingell’s honor.
Sen. Sylvia Santana, D-Detroit, introduced the legislation and said in a statement Dingell was “a generational leader who was deeply representative of the people in his district.”
“He was a staple of our community for so many years, and we miss him dearly,” she said. “It’s my hope that this recognition will encourage all who travel the freeway to remember and learn more about such a wonderful, giving man.”
