LANSING, Mich. (March 24, 2022) — Sen. Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit) has issued the following statement after the Senate today passed a bipartisan budget supplemental appropriations bill package that includes funding for necessary water infrastructure, housing supports and rental assistance, and the expansion and development of local parks:
“Michiganders deserve to live in a state that prioritizes their health and well-being, which is why I am so pleased to support this bipartisan effort in clean water infrastructure, rental and mortgage assistance, affordable housing, and projects to increase the greenspace in Detroit so residents can get outside, engage with our community, and enjoy all the beauty of the city we love. This begins with ensuring that Michiganders have stable and affordable housing, access to clean water, and safe, well-kept areas to engage with the community and enjoy the outdoors.
“Michigan has an exciting future ahead. These investments are proof of our commitment to sustainability and enriching the lives of those who choose to call Michigan home. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with my colleagues across the aisle to keep up this positive momentum and investment into the people of this state and my district.”
Investments in clean water infrastructure, housing support, and parks include:
- More than $1 billion for safe drinking water funding, including help for communities tackling toxic contaminants like PFAS and to replace lead pipes, with $75 million specifically targeted for lead service line replacement in Detroit.
- $712 million for a clean water grant and loan program, including assistance to protect public health and to fix failing septic systems.
- $500 million for rent and mortgage assistance.
- $100 million to help develop duplexes, townhouses, and other similar housing options.
- $250 million to improve state parks, trails, and recreation areas.
