LANSING — Sen. Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit) has issued the following statement after the Michigan Senate passed a resolution she introduced today to declare April as “Sexual Assault Awareness Month” in Michigan:
“Sexual violence is an issue for everyone — it impacts women, children and men of all ages, and affects all races, cultures and economic backgrounds. If we want to end sexual assault, it starts with recognition and education on how serious a problem this is. We must do our best to eliminate sexual violence from our society, and I hope this resolution continues an important and necessary conversation.”
According to the most recent Michigan State Police Crime Data and Statistics report in 2017, there were more than 11,000 reported cases of sexual assault in the state of Michigan, although unfortunately, this number does not take into account how many cases go unreported or underreported.
