LANSING — Sen. Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit) today introduced legislation to rename part of US-24 in Dearborn as the “John D. Dingell, Jr. Memorial Highway” in honor of the former Congressman who served nearly 60 years in our nation’s capital and earned the title of “Dean” of the U.S. House.
“John Dingell, Jr. was not only a dedicated husband and father, he was a generational leader who was deeply representative of the people in his district. He was a staple of our community for so many years, and we miss him dearly. It’s my hope that this recognition will encourage all who travel the freeway to remember and learn more about such a wonderful, giving man. The honor and integrity he showed while serving us in the halls of Congress and in this community is something we should all strive toward, whether we serve in elected office or not.”
Senate Bill 387 would rename a section of US-24 that spans the city limits of Dearborn, which is where Dingell lived with his wife, U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell.
The legislation has been referred to the Senate Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
