LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit) has issued the following statement on today’s Senate Oversight Committee meeting, where testimony is being heard regarding absentee ballot counting at the TCF Center in Detroit:
“In a global pandemic, the health and safety of people need to be made the highest priority. Yet, we have some in the Michigan Legislature who continue to attempt to disenfranchise more than 5.5 million Michiganders from the Upper Peninsula to Detroit, especially those in Wayne County, who elected Joe Biden by an overwhelming margin of 155,000 votes — more than 14 times Trump’s margin in 2016. The election is over. The voters have decided, and investigations have repeatedly revealed that we had a safe and secure voting process.
“Just imagine how many lives could have been saved by now had this same amount of effort been put into a pandemic response. It is past time we move on and work to make sure our families get the care and support they need so that, together, we can tackle the alarming spike of COVID cases and casualties. We cannot afford to wait any longer, so let’s create the better future that our constituents deserve and sent us here to do.”
